Reading up on it, I've discovered it's written and produced by the guys who brought Teletubbies and Thomas & Friends to American audiences. Apparently, they were inspired by a screening of Madea Goes to Jail of all things -- specifically, how the audience would talk back at the screen. (Wow, that's pretty racist.) They wanted to make a children's movie where the same kind of interaction with the screen would be encouraged.<br /><br />This does not make it seem any more legitimate, it goes without saying.
