That is definite...Thanks for the compliment, Rick!

That is definitely the majority opinion about No Country. I'm not going to say that my initial reaction to it was immature, but I did clearly want more resolution, and I was incapable of appreciating this film's intention to frustrate me -- even though I definitely can and have appreciated that in other films.Derek Armstronghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13750747272647975591noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7877371347086447490.post-31189976658580666092010-05-12T02:35:33.216+10:002010-05-12T02:35:33.216+10:00No Country For Old Men is my favorite movie from 2...No Country For Old Men is my favorite movie from 2007 and possibly even my favorite movie of the decade. I loved it. When the movie ended I seriously sat in the theater completely stunned by what I had just seen. I had never seen anything it, it simply amazed me. The ending was totally frustrating, but that was the point and it worked so well.

By the way, just found your blog and I've been reading through it. Totally digging it. And I think the reason I didn't get that sooner is that the Coen films it seems obvious to compare No Country to (Fargo, Blood Simple) have fewer metaphorical elements and are more straightforward.

Thanks for the compliment!Derek Armstronghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13750747272647975591noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7877371347086447490.post-66508509551294930402010-05-05T08:59:24.566+10:002010-05-05T08:59:24.566+10:00I agree that TWBB is a superior film, but I think ...I agree that TWBB is a superior film, but I think No COuntry should be considered metaphorically.

I think Moss was killed by whatever violence was closest to him at the moment when he lost his focus (the woman in what I believe was a red bathing suit at the pool). Chigurh represents violence in its most primal form. nothing can stop it or end it (violence), which is where I think the car accident comes into play.

Other than those few points I enjoyed the writeup. It too does not have a traditional narrative structure in the sense that there's no obvious resolution to the character that feels traditionally satisfying. Yet I was immensely satisfied by the ending of TWBB.Derek Armstronghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13750747272647975591noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7877371347086447490.post-46971482112801598762010-05-05T04:30:08.379+10:002010-05-05T04:30:08.379+10:00I totally agree, Simon. Watching No Country again made me think that There Will Be Blood's margin of superiority is slightly less than I thought previously, but There Will Be Blood is, as you said, an absolutely unique cinematic vision with impeccable execution. It's a masterful epic that will one day be appreciated as one of the greatest films of its era.Derek Armstronghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13750747272647975591noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7877371347086447490.post-5324954854542717122010-05-05T04:11:39.611+10:002010-05-05T04:11:39.611+10:00I rewatched the two films only recently and 'T...I rewatched the two films only recently and 'There Will Be Blood' is a much stronger film than 'No Country for Old Men'. Something much more unique and unsettling about TWBB, while with NCFOM it seems like an incredibly well-made Coen brothers movie, but ultimately something that - in some shape or form - has been seen before. NOTHING like TWBB was made prior to it.

Simon
www.screeninsight.comsimoncolumbhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09027922399726786918noreply@blogger.com
