And because I reviewed it so recently, it hasn't posted online yet. I would certainly like to direct you to it so you can read it, when it does post. However, I like to retain anonymity on my blog, and posting the link here would go against that. But if you'd like to post your own email address, I will send you the link. (Don't worry, as you can see, I have only 12 followers, and I doubt any of them are checking out the comments section of a post that's 14 months old.)

Even though I referred to it as "sketchy," I was reasonably generous toward it in my review. I guess it depends on what your definition of "reasonably" is!

Thanks for commenting ...

VanceDerek Armstronghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13750747272647975591noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7877371347086447490.post-53767697558246166782010-03-09T15:04:55.236+11:002010-03-09T15:04:55.236+11:00Hi... The list on the right says you have done a review on the film, but I was not able to find it on your site. Can you post a link to your review of the film.

As far as how the release dates go, indie films (especially indie films) tend to hit the festival circuit in hopes of getting some attention and hopefully get a distributor. For smaller films without the big budget for adverstising, this can take months, and even years. I was looking for a list of Oscar eligible films for 2008, and though I didn't seem able to find that, I did find this, which is a pretty complete compendium. Interestingly, it includes 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days but not The Counterfeiters. Which at least proves that there should be a distinction between them. Naturally, the site doesn't explain why it includes some films and not others -- at least not where I could see it -- but it works for me.Derek Armstronghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13750747272647975591noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7877371347086447490.post-16580255231837894682009-01-12T18:50:00.000+11:002009-01-12T18:50:00.000+11:00Yeah, this post is a little long. That's the year it's exposed to us and the year in which it fits alongside the Hollywood stuff also on your list.

It's harder for US indie films. Take THE FOOT FIST WAY (please!). I saw it at Sundance and it wasn't officially released in the US until last year. By your standards, I would have had to put that on my 06 list, while you would have put it on your 08 list.

It all comes down to how you define your lists. Is your list a list of all of the films you've seen that year, or the year that the movies are released.

Wow...I didn't think I could be long winded, but I guess I can.DGBhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01302995272029761401noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7877371347086447490.post-64364696432925735282009-01-08T17:26:00.000+11:002009-01-08T17:26:00.000+11:00Thanks, Don, for just the kind of detailed conside...Thanks, Don, for just the kind of detailed consideration I was hoping for ... you've pushed me a little closer to making up my mind. I simplify my definition of Academy Award eligibility to having a theatrical release during the calendar year (and I would argue that film festivals are not theatrical releases (at least the ones with a marketplace atmosphere), but art-house screenings and film tours are (arbitrary, I know) so depending on how you would define Shriekfest, the Shriekfest films could count). Typically a film like 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days would NOT count because it was released in Calendar Year 2007. But I guess Foreign Films are different – and as you point out, you weren’t about to fly to Romania to see this film in 2007. Maybe we should judge the eligibility of Foreign Films with two standards instead of one: first would be U.S. Theatrical Release Date (the Calendar Year that a film was released in theaters in the United States is the year that it applies to (so with this scale, both 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days and The Counterfeiters are 2008 year-end list eligible)); and second would be Oscar Eligibility. This second category is a bit harder to determine, but I would say that a movie nominated for (or winning) a Foreign language Oscar in one year wouldn’t be eligible the following year. Under this logic, 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days appears to be eligible for your 2008 list, while The Counterfeiters is not. SO…I am recanting my previous dismissal of 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days’ eligibility and am now fully on board with it. Count it.Don Handsomehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04448844952916507647noreply@blogger.com
