But nothing I've seen on Netflix made me laugh as hard as what I saw on Disney+ on Friday night.
It was the same scenario, lounging after the completion of a program, which in this case was a viewing with my wife of Only Murders in the Building. Murders plays on Disney+ here in Australia through its relationship with Hulu.
I noticed an ad for Transformers come on -- I mean, not really an ad, but 45 seconds worth of footage that was meant to entice you and possibly get you to push play. At first I was kind of looking through it -- I mean, who needs to watch an ad for a movie you've already seen that's 19 years old and was never very good to begin with? But in the 23% of my attention I was giving to it, I got the sense that it was really anodyne, especially for what it was advertising.
As I said, I wasn't fully engaged with what I was watching the first time. So I waited for it to come around a second time, and below is what I saw. It's only 45 seconds long, so you can afford to watch it yourself.
Now I didn't have the sound on. That might have changed my impression of how funny this ad was. Maybe the dialogue was really rich with intrigue in a way the images so clearly aren't.
But if you are going only off the images -- and images are king when it comes to the movies -- then this ad for Transformers shows exactly two things, each more boring than the next:
1) Shia LaBeouf having a conversation with Peter Jacobson in a classroom;
2) Shia LaBeouf getting into a car with Kevin Dunn.
And not even a transforming car.
Simply put:
HOW the HELL do you have an ad for Transformers that does not feature ANY TRANSFORMERS?
And if you are going to make the curious decision not to show any Transformers in your Transformers ad, how the hell do you at least not try to entice people with a shot of Megan Fox?
Flabbergasting, and hilarious.
